Pre-Rolls 101: Singles, Multipacks, Infused Pre-Rolls & More

Cannabis pre-rolls are simple by design: the grinding, rolling and packing are already done for you.

The part that gets confusing is figuring out what all the different types actually mean.

Single? Multipack? Infused? Blunt-style? Dart?

Here’s the no-nonsense breakdown.

What Is a Cannabis Pre-Roll?

A pre-roll is cannabis that has already been ground, packed and rolled into a ready-to-use format.

Instead of buying flower along with papers and a grinder, the preparation has already been done by the producer.

That basic idea stays the same across most pre-rolls. What changes is the size, number of rolls in the package, type of cannabis inside and whether concentrates have been added.

Single Pre-Rolls

This one is exactly what it sounds like: one pre-roll in the package.

Singles make it easier to purchase a smaller amount of a particular cultivar without committing to an entire multipack.

They can also come in different sizes, so check both the weight and cannabinoid information on the label rather than assuming every single pre-roll is the same.

Multipack Pre-Rolls

Multipacks contain several smaller pre-rolls in one package.

You might see formats such as:

  • 3 × 0.5 g

  • 5 × 0.35 g

  • 10 smaller pre-rolls

The advantage here is portioning and convenience. Rather than having one larger pre-roll, the package is divided into several individual rolls.

Always look at the total weight and the size of each pre-roll when comparing packs.

Infused Pre-Rolls

This is where things change quite a bit.

An infused pre-roll combines cannabis flower with some form of cannabis concentrate or extract.

Depending on the product, that could include:

  • Kief

  • Hash

  • Rosin

  • Live resin

  • Distillate

  • Diamonds or other extracts

Because concentrates can contain much higher concentrations of cannabinoids than dried flower, infused pre-rolls can also have substantially higher THC levels.

Don't assume "stronger" means "better." Read the label and know what is actually inside before choosing one.

What About Blunt-Style Pre-Rolls?

Blunt-style products typically use a thicker wrap than a standard paper pre-roll.

That can change the size, airflow and burn characteristics of the product.

Wrap materials vary, especially within Canada's regulated cannabis market, so the product label is the best place to find out exactly what you're buying.

And What Is a "Dart"?

"Dart" isn't one standardized cannabis category.

Some brands use the term for compact or tightly packed pre-rolls. Others use it for premium or specialty formats with a distinctive filter, shape or construction.

In other words: don't shop by the word "dart" alone.

Check the package.

What Should You Compare?

Instead of worrying about which style is "best," look at:

  • Total weight

  • Number of pre-rolls

  • Size of each pre-roll

  • THC and CBD

  • Whether it's flower-only or infused

  • Cultivar

  • Terpene information, when provided

  • Ingredients and wrap information

Those details will tell you much more than the package name.

The Short Version

Single: One ready-to-use pre-roll.

Multipack: Several pre-rolls in one package.

Infused: Flower combined with a concentrate or extract.

Blunt-style: A pre-roll made with a thicker alternative wrap.

Dart or specialty roll: Check the package—the term can mean different things depending on the producer.
