Flower vs. Pre-Rolls: What’s the Difference?
Flower or pre-rolls?
They may both start with cannabis flower, but they're sold in very different formats.
The easiest way to decide between them isn't to ask which one is "better." It's to figure out whether you care more about control and flexibility or convenience and preparation.
What Is Cannabis Flower?
Cannabis flower is the dried and cured bud of the cannabis plant.
It's sold loose in regulated packages and can be ground and used with compatible smoking or vaporizing accessories.
Flower gives the consumer control over how much is prepared at one time and what equipment is used.
What Are Pre-Rolls?
Pre-rolls are cannabis that has already been ground, portioned and rolled by the producer.
They can come as:
Singles
Multipacks
Mini pre-rolls
Larger formats
Infused pre-rolls
Specialty rolls
The main difference is obvious: the prep work has already been done.
Preparation
Flower
Flower usually requires a few extra steps.
Depending on how it's being consumed, that might mean a grinder, rolling papers or another compatible accessory.
Pre-Rolls
Pre-rolls come prepared.
No rolling required.
For people who don't want to carry papers and a grinder or who simply don't enjoy rolling. That simplicity is the main attraction.
Control
Flower offers more flexibility.
You determine how much to grind and prepare at one time.
With a pre-roll, the producer has already chosen:
The weight
Grind
Paper
Filter
Packing density
That consistency can be convenient, but it gives you less control over the finished product.
Freshness
Whole flower and ground cannabis can age differently because grinding increases the amount of cannabis exposed to air.
Packaging, storage and the age of the product all matter.
A sealed pre-roll isn't automatically stale, and a container of flower isn't automatically fresh. Check package information and store cannabis correctly after opening.
Price and Value
Don't assume one format is always cheaper.
Loose flower may have a lower price per gram in some cases, particularly in larger packages.
Pre-rolls include the added convenience of having the product ground, portioned and rolled.
The useful comparison is:
What am I paying per gram, and how much do I actually want?
Someone who only wants a small amount may find a pre-roll more practical even if its per-gram price is higher.
Product Visibility
One thing we'd change from the usual flower-vs-pre-roll advice: you generally aren't opening regulated cannabis packages in the store to inspect the buds before buying them.
Once opened, whole flower does let you see the bud structure and condition more clearly than cannabis that has already been ground inside a pre-roll.
Before purchase, use the information on the package and ask questions if you aren't sure what you're looking at.
The Quick Comparison
Flower gives you more control over:
Portion size
Grind
Accessories
Preparation
How the product is consumed
Pre-rolls give you more convenience through:
No grinding
No rolling
Predetermined portions
Easy-to-understand package formats
Neither is automatically the better choice.
They're simply two different ways of buying cannabis.
